This workshop provides an introduction to the fundamental Linux concepts used for running programs and writing small scripts. Delivered in a hands-on format, it will cover the use of the command line—both on a local Linux workstation and through remote access with SSH. Participants will gain an understanding of key shell environments, including Bash and Csh.In addition, the workshop will explore the role of modern AI tools such as ChatGPT in the learning process. Examples will illustrate how AI can be leveraged to support command-line learning, assist with scripting, and provide on-demand guidance for troubleshooting and problem-solving.

Most life science disciplines need common Bioinformatics tools to answer different questions. To this end, this workshop is designed for students or researchers that are just starting on their career in life sciences. We are going to start with the most basic and most popular tool in Bioinformatics; BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool). We are going to briefly cover the basics of sequence alignment and delve into the command line aspects. The focus will be on creating specialized databases for your own research.
